5/7 - Election Judge Training

Thursday, May 7th 2026 - 6:00 PM

Town Hall

There have been legislative changes that impact how training will be conducted this year, and these updates will be reflected in all training materials.

Key Changes

1 - All training will be conducted in person.

  • Basic Judge Training will require a full 2-hour in-person session.
  • Every Election judge is required to take this course every 2 years.

Pre-training requirement:

All attendees must watch the full 80-minute training video provided by the Secretary of State before attending the in-person session.

Video link: Election Judge Training 2024 - YouTube

Training certificates will not be issued until this requirement is completed.

Clerks and Head Judges:

Must complete an additional 2 hours of training.

This will now be combined into one class.

Multiple individuals may complete Head Judge training if desired. (Note: Some counties require all judges to complete this training. Currently, Mille Lacs County does not require all judges to complete this training.)

Head judges are expected to be on site during the entire duration of voting day, this includes March Township elections. By having multiple Head Judges, it allows for split shifts.

Election Judge Record Form:

Please have judges complete the attached form prior to training if possible.

Forms will also be available on the day of training.

If NOT affiliated with one of the major parties, then they MUST provide a statement confirming their “un-affiliation” status (attached)

Un-affiliated judges cannot serve in certain roles on election day

Clerk Training Requirement (Reminder):

All clerks administering elections—including March township elections—are required to attend training.

This requirement is not optional.

Additional Notes

The signup link may be shared; however, participants should contact you with questions before reaching out to the county.

Basic Judge classes will possibly include some equipment training.

An advanced equipment training course will also be offered:

Recommended for anyone using Poll Pads on Election Day

Encouraged for Clerks and Head Judges

Recommended for any new election judges

Classes are offered morning, afternoon, and evening at both locations:

Please verify the location when registering

The City of Wahkon will again host sessions for the north end of the county

All judges may attend any session, regardless of residence within the county

If you are planning multiple classes on same day, please plan for a quick lunch as we will only have half hour breaks in between courses.

PAT Testing (Head Judges and Clerks)

All Head Judges will be required to attend PAT Testing or the advanced equipment training. Clerks will be required to attend the PAT testing. PAT testing does NOT include poll pad training.

Additional details, including dates and times, will be shared closer to the testing period. This requirement ensures Head Judges are comfortable operating the equipment they oversee on Election Day.
